Perturbation based Large Margin Approach for Ranking

چکیده
The use of the standard hinge loss for structured outputs, for the learning to rank problem, faces two main caveats: (a) the label space, the set of all possible permutations of items to be ranked, is too large, and also less amenable to the usual dynamic-programming based techniques used for structured outputs, and (b) the supervision or training data consists of instances with multiple labels per input, instead of just a single label. The most natural way to deal with such multiple labels leads, unfortunately, to a nonconvex surrogate. In this paper, we propose a general class of perturbation-based surrogates that leverage the large margin approach, and are convex. We show that the standard hinge surrogate for classification actually falls within this class. We also find a surrogate within this class, for the ranking problem, that does not suffer from the caveats mentioned above. Indeed, our experiments demonstrate that it performs better than other candidate large margin proposals on both synthetic and real world ranking datasets.

Ranking Structured Documents: A Large Margin Based Approach for Patent Prior Art Search
We propose an approach for automatically ranking structured documents applied to patent prior art search. Our model, SVM Patent Ranking (SVMPR) incorporates margin constraints that directly capture the specificities of patent citation ranking. Our approach combines patent domain knowledge features with meta-score features from several different general Information Retrieval methods. The trainin...
متن کاملRanking with Large Margin Principle: Two Approaches
We discuss the problem of ranking k instances with the use of a “large margin” principle. We introduce two main approaches: the first is the “fixed margin” policy in which the margin of the closest neighboring classes is being maximized — which turns out to be a direct generalization of SVM to ranking learning. The second approach allows for k different margins where the sum of margins is maxim...
متن کاملTaxonomy of Large Margin Principle Algorithms for Ordinal Regression Problems
We discuss the problem of ranking instances where an instance is associated with an integer from 1 to k. In other words, the specialization of the general multi-class learning problem when there exists an ordering among the instances — a problem known as “ordinal regression” or “ranking learning”. This problem arises in various settings both in visual recognition and other information retrieval...
متن کاملFast Unsupervised Automobile Insurance Fraud Detection Based on Spectral Ranking of Anomalies
Collecting insurance fraud samples is costly and if performed manually is very time consuming. This issue suggests usage of unsupervised models. One of the accurate methods in this regards is Spectral Ranking of Anomalies (SRA) that is shown to work better than other methods for auto insurance fraud detection specifically. However, this approach is not scalable to large samples and is not appro...
